Buddha Bose was born to British stage magicians, and married in to the family of Bishnu Ghosh and Yogananda. The magic of yoga was in his blood. The story begins at a time when Indian nationalism was at is peak, when "physical culture" took its shape, and neighborhood saints teaching samadhi and pranayama, lived in the urban setting of Calcutta, India. The book follows this Calcutta yoga family through four generations to the present as modern yoga reaches the world.

“Nobody stays in Calcutta for a long time without getting involved, in one way or the other. I can feel how deeply you are now linked and it moves me. The way you write about it all, interweaving historical facts with your own experiences. The result is a book which is neither an autobiography nor a purely scientific work — quite a unique mixture.”
— Claudia Guggenbühl, Yoga in Calcutta

"I wish I was doing what he is doing."

Calcutta Yoga
by Jerome Armstrong

The publication of Calcutta Yoga in 2018 is the culmination of four years of research and fieldwork in Calcutta, India, and places around the world. The book includes original research translated from Bengali and over 100 photographs. It also includes memoirs of the travel, as the author delved into the history of yoga in Calcutta, and how it was modernized, and its voyage to yoga practitioners today.
